What is Happiness

"Well," said Pooh, "what I like best," and then he had to stop and think. Because although Eating Honey was a very good thing to do, there was a moment just before you began to eat it which was better than when you were, but he didn't know what it was called. (A.A. Milne)
It is true if people say that some words are meant not to be described because those are maybe too complicated or just states of mind. Words like love and happiness are difficult to be defined most of the time, so we often just pass the moments where love or happiness lie on it without being able to recognize them.

Why happiness becomes so difficult to be explained? What is called as happiness actually? These are two simple questions, but the answers for these two questions may not be as simple as the question itself. Many people put much effort pursuing their happiness without knowing what is happiness actually. Moreover, it is such an ironic fact when people struggle to reach something which they believe as happiness, but when they already get it, unfortunately it does not make them happy. Regarding the ironic fact, it is wise enough if we define happiness as a state of mind, so we are the one who determines which things are our happiness, and not the things which seem promise to give us happiness.

Happiness does not come from outside because it is created inside by the state of our mind. What comes into our life is just a thing, and it will remain meaningless until we decide whether it is good for us, or it is bad. It is obvious that we are the one who give the meaning for every single thing that comes into our life. For example, when something happens to us, and we consider it as a good thing, emotionally we will feel happy about that. However, it is also possible when the same thing happens to another person, it will be considered as a bad thing by the person because everyone has their own point of view in seeing things. If the case is like that, instead of feeling happy, the person tends to feel terrible about what happened to him. Based on the previous explanation, we can draw a more specific definition of happiness which is a personal state of feeling good about something.

When we talk about happiness, we have no certain term that can be used to describe happiness itself because everyone has their own references to describe happiness. Everyone has various of references that will be used by their mind to state their feeling about something. That is why for some people happiness can be about passion, freedom, or satisfaction; but for others it may be more about hope, peace, and inspiration. Furthermore, happiness is a temporary state of mind. No one in this world will feel happy for the entire of their life after feeling happy for once. For example, when people get a promotion for their job, they will be very happy for the success. Nevertheless, after they celebrating and enjoying the euphoria for their success, their feeling will be back as usual one. It clearly shows that happiness never lasts forever, yet happiness will be stated again in another occasion. There will be so many chances for people to meet happiness especially if they always try to be positive.

As the conclusion, since happiness is a personal state of mind, so we do not need somebody else to make us happy. We are the one who need to decide whether we want to be happy or not to be. If we always try to see things from the positive side, the result will be a positive state of mind as well. It means that happiness simply comes from our positive thought toward everything in our life
